Although I don't consider myself a writer, I do find that as designers we end up doing our fair share of it. Whether it is copy writing for an ad or trying to explain an idea in an e-mail, these rules help tremendously. I also recently picked up a copy of "Elements of Style" by Maira Kalman at Design Thinkers this year and I adore it. All the text is easy, clever, and fun to read.

The Riots in Greece

"On the night of Saturday, December 6th, two Special Guards of the Greek police clashed with a small group of young men. The exact details of what took place are still unclear, but it is known that one of the Guards fired three shots, and one of those bullets caused the death of 15-year-old Alexander Grigoropoulos - whether the injury was made by an accidental ricochet or deliberate shot remains to be determined. The two Guards are now in jail awaiting trial, the shooter charged with homicide. This incident sparked an immediate and widespread response in the form of angry demonstrations and riots in many Greek cities that have continued at varying levels to this day - though dimming in intensity recently. Alexander's death appears to have been a catalyst, unleashing widespread Greek anger towards many issues - police mistreatment of protesters, unwelcome education reforms, economic stagnation, government corruption and more." -

The photography on this page is amazing and so emotionally charged. I'm constantly amazed that we don't have situations like this happening all over all the time. It takes such a huge amount of anger, rage, and frustration to move people like this and I can only imagine how they feel.

As bottled water comes under more scrutiny, companies are changing the way they do business. How can you enjoy a bottle of exotically sourced water when you know what sort of pollution it creates just to haul it over here?

Tap'd NY has launched a bottled water line that promotes the fact it is simply filtered New York tap water. The design of the bottle is pretty swank and I think it's a step in the right direction even though it doesn't solve the plastic bottle problem completely.

Looks like there’s a new way to get your logo out and seen. Flogos, a combination of helium and soap are pumped out of a machine kinda like a big bubble maker to make logos that are lighter than air. They appear to be the next step after airplane banners and look cheaper in the long run. The site says they are 100% environmentally safe and are currently only available in white. I guess this kinda machine goes to show a simple logo can be a handy thing indeed.

Team agrayspace has online a large collection of Polish posters produced since the 1940’s. I always find myself taking a look at the images and although I’ve seen them regularly, I can’t get over how disturbingly provocative they are at times. I think this is a great online inspiration reference, especially for those of us in North America who don’t typically see this style.

Hans Brinker Budget Hotel

Hans Brinker always has some hilarious stuff to market their budget hotel. We saw Kesselskramer talk about their strategy for the hotel a year or so ago at DesignThinkers in Toronto. If you get a chance look up their videos on Youtube, pretty amusing stuff. I especially love how they embrace the idea of cheapness in such a clever way.

I’ve always had a thing for Art Nouveau and this desk is pretty sweet. I’m usually a modern sort of girl, but there’s something about it’s handmade look I’m digging. Plus the curved drawers rock. Although on the down side, it looks like a desk you’d probably see in a Lord of Rings film. Those hobbits would love this. (Link)

1st Issue Launched!

It’s Official!

soap+water has released it’s first edition and after a grand celebration last night (pictures coming shortly) our paperless edition is online. Thank you to those who came out and showed your support, it really meant a lot to us. We had a great time and we’re excited to get started on the next issue.

I’ve used diyphotography.net on a number of occassions looking for good ideas to make photographs great, without spending 2 grand on extra equipment. There are some great ideas for a really simple stabalizer, softbox, and ringlights. Very interesting effects for the photographer on a budget.

Our New Addition!

Soap+Water is launching very soon and we thought it would be nice to add a little something to our site. The addition of the blog gives us a place to share great finds and post articles and submissions we might not have had a chance to print.The 3 of us will be writing about design both in the north and abroad and we encourage you to send us links or design work you think we might like. Not everything you find here will be design related, but we know inspiration comes from everywhere!

We’re getting geared up for the official launch of our first issue this February 7th at Cambrian College’s student centre, On the Rocks. The event starts at 7pm and we’re really looking forward to getting the magazine into people’s hands. Public support has been great and we’re excited to get started on our second edition.

I figured to start things off right I’d post some links that keep me entertained and inspired. Remember, if you want to share any links or work with us, send it to submissions@soapandwater.org and we’ll take a look!
